The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard body horror, but within Together exists a intense meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
